The word TAASA means "Let's Go" or "Do It" in Maasai. The lodge has its roots in family, dating back to 2007 when Jim Roane took his family on safari in Tanzania. The Roane's fell in love with the country and its people, and Jim leapt at the opportunity to invest in a lodge when it presented itself.
In 2008, Peter Taunton visited Tanzania with his family at Jim's request. Peter too was captivated by the country, and decided to invest in the lodge. Peter is active in supporting nonprofit organizations in the United States, and saw this investment not only as a way to provide guests with a remarkable safari experience, but also as a philanthropic venture to protect wildlife, and support the local community.
Over time, Peter and Jim's initial investment took on a more hands-on approach, and they eventually became sole owners of the lodge and transformed TAASA into the safari destination that it is today. The values of the new TAASA Lodge are centered around family, service, adventure and the environment.
In alignment with our mission, we are 100% committed to empowering and employing members of the local Tanzania communities.
As a family company, we fell in love not just with the breathtaking landscape and the untamed wildlife but also with the locals. Ololosokwan is a nearby Maasai Boma village, where approximately 70-75% of our team members reside. We are honored to call their community TAASA family, all 6,000+ of them.
Because the Maasai are a huge part of who we are, their culture is carefully woven into the very fabric of our company and is reflected in both our name and our logo.
